Biolan Greywater Filter Light | Biological Grey Water Filtration System
Questions about this product
Questions about this product
How much flow will one unit handle, and how do I scale up?
One module is rated for approximately 300 litres per day, with a maximum instantaneous flow of 50 litres per hour. For higher volumes, modules can be connected in series or parallel. If you’re pumping, use a timer and dose a single module at 10 litres per cycle or 20 litres per cycle for multi-module setups, with 10-20 minute pauses between cycles.
Do I need a septic tank, or can I go straight in and out?
No septic tank is required. You can feed the filter by gravity or pump. If you already have septic tanks and want to use them, they must be in good condition and sealed. Treated effluent should discharge to a stone pocket, infiltration pit, or an open ditch with a screen, and it must flow freely in high-water conditions.
Can I run this through winter?
The Light model is non-insulated. It can be used year-round only if the unit sits in a space that stays above 0 °C. If the media freezes during storage, it is not damaged. Thaw by pouring warm, clean water through in spring.
What can go in, and what must stay out?
This greywater system is designed to handle wastewater from sinks, showers, and laundry. It can tolerate small amounts of common antibacterial or chlorine cleaners when used as directed. However, it is important to note that blackwater, rainwater, and foundation drains should not be sent through this system. Additionally, toxic chemicals, oils, solvents, or anything that could harm the beneficial microbes in the system should not be sent either.
What are the regulations and permits I should know about?
Municipal and provincial rules govern greywater leaching pits. In Ontario, for example, they are classified as Class 2 sewage systems. Core standards include keeping the system entirely on your lot and preventing surface discharge or release to surface water or groundwater. Always confirm permitting with your local building authority before installation.

Biolan Greywater Filter Light | Biological Grey Water Filtration System
The Biolan Greywater Filter Light is a compact, modular grey water filtration system designed for treating household grey water from sinks, showers and laundry. It uses a combination of mechanical and biological filtration to clean water before it is discharged into a gravel leach bed, making it ideal for cottages, off grid cabins and rural homes where simple, low energy treatment is needed.
Grey water passes through five stacked filter boxes inside the module. The organic filter material captures phosphates and other impurities while micro-organisms living on the surface of the media break down organic matter as their food source. Water flows by gravity from one layer to the next and exits as treated effluent. The filter material typically lasts 3 to 6 months depending on load and is easy to replace as part of regular maintenance.
This system is designed for grey water only. It must not receive toilet waste, storm water, foundation drainage or toxic chemicals. When installed and sized correctly, the Biolan Greywater Filter Light meets the limit values for total phosphorus, total nitrogen and organic material in grey wastewater in accordance with Environmental Protection Law 527/2014 and Decree 157/2017.
